​What is the fly-tip task force?

The fly-tip task force team are law enforcement officers who respond to incidents of fly-tipping and gather the evidence needed to fine or prosecute fly-tippers. 

The team was formed after the Mayor responded to residents concerns about living in a clean environment.
 
 

How are fly-tips investigated?

The fly-tip task force use covert camera vehicles, hidden camera devices and CCTV to observe fly-tipping hotspots. 

When fly-tips are found, the team carefully search through items to gather evidence. Some investigations have involved coordinated investigations with other local authorities, agencies and police forces.
 
 

Do the fly-tip task force clear fly-tips?

The fly-tip task force team do not physically clear fly tips. The waste collection team clear fly-tips in Newham at a cost of over £3 million per year. The fly-tip task force team are working hard to bring down that cost by ensuring that people who illegally dump waste in Newham are brought to justice.
 
 

Enforcement action undertaken 

The fly-tip task force team can issue £80 fixed penalty notices for littering or £400 fly-tipping fines on the spot. 

At court, fly-tippers can receive an unlimited fine or imprisonment.
