Crossrail in Newham

The Elizabeth line is a new cross-London rail service that will connect Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east via a new tunnel under central London.
Closure of Factory Road 18 September 2017 for 4 weeks

A section of Factory Road outside London City Metals will be closed from 07:00 on Monday 18 September for 4 weeks to allow for a crane to be set up on the road.

What's happening in Newham

Newham has four stations on the north east branch (to Shenfield) at Stratford, Manor Park, Forest Gate and Maryland and one station on the south eastern branch at Custom House.

Newham residents along the route will enjoy faster journey times to central London when the services begin in 2019. Other benefits include more spacious air-conditioned trains and step free access.
The new trains were unveiled in July 2016 and the first of the new trains began serving stations from Liverpool Street to Shenfield in June 2017, including three stations in Newham.

Initially, the train will operate one return trip a day in the off-peak between Liverpool Street and Shenfield. Further trains will be gradually introduced over the next few months, with eleven in service on the route by the autumn. The trains are seven carriages to fit the existing platforms at Liverpool Street and will later be extended to nine carriages (with capacity for up to 1500 people) when Shenfield services extend to Paddington in 2019.

Images of the Elizabeth line train and time-lapse footage of the production line are now available.

Passengers' experience as they arrive and leave from our stations will also be improved. We have secured significant funding to make changes to the areas outside the stations.

Improvements to the stations

Network Rail (on behalf of Crossrail Ltd) and Transport for London are making improvements to stations in Newham in preparation for the arrival of the Elizabeth line from December 2018.

While the improvements take place there will be some disruption in and around the stations including road diversions, noise and vibrations.

Find out what is happening at Manor Park, Forest Gate Station, Maryland and Custom House.

Temporary line closures

As part of the improvement works to stations and train tracks there will be temporary line closures.

These closures will affect TfL Rail services at Manor Park, Forest Gate and Maryland.

This is while Network Rail carry out track and station improvements as part of their Railway Upgrade Plan, as well as Crossrail construction works.

August Bank holiday
There will be no TFL service on Sunday 27 and Monday 28 August between Liverpool Street and Shenfield. Customers are being advised to check before they travel. Rail replacement buses will operate between Stratford and Romford calling at all stations as follows:

Stratford - Forest Gate - Manor Park - Ilford - Seven Kings - Goodmayes - Chadwell Heath - Romford

Shenfield - Brentwood - Harold Wood - Gidea Park - Romford - Chadwell Heath - Newbury Park (for the Central Line)

Tickets will be accepted on the Central Line from Newbury Park to and from London Liverpool Street. Greater Anglia customers are being advised to use the rail replacement service which will run between Ingatestone/Billericay and Newbury Park (London Underground station).

Improvements to the area outside the stations

We have secured almost seven million pounds of investment from Transport for London to improve the areas around Manor Park, Forest Gate and Maryland stations.

The works will:
  • provide new planting and landscaping
  • declutter the areas by removing old street furniture
  • make the areas more attractive with local street art
  • provide better access to buses and taxi networks
  • improve lighting, junctions and crossings
  • create safe and secure walking and cycling routes.
For more information about each of the proposals, including plans and images of what the area will look like, and to find out about the works taking place, visit our Manor Park, Forest Gate and Maryland pages.

Have your say

We have consulted on proposed improvements to the areas outside Manor Park, Forest Gate and Maryland stations. We have listened to what you told us and have made some changes to our plans.
