Customers can still make payments, but online account balances will not be updated until Tuesday 25 February 2020.​

Local history and archives

We have a range of facilities, resources and museum collections at our Archives and Local Studies Library that can help you to find out about the history of the borough and its people.

Please note the Archives and Local Studies Library is closed until Sunday 12 January 2020 and no appointments will be available during this time. It will also not be possible to provide any information that will require accessing documentation from the archives until Monday 13 January 2020.  The next available appointment will be on Thursday 16 January 2020. We are open by appointment at the following times: 
  • Tuesday 10.30am to 1pm and 2.30pm to 5pm​
  • Thursday 10.30am to 1pm and 2.30pm to 5pm

Our collections

Our archives and local studies collections include:
  • local authority records of Newham Council and its predecessors, including East and West Ham County Borough Councils, dating from the 17th century to the present day
  • records of the West Ham Board of Guardians
  • school, hospital and manorial records
  • records of local businesses, institutions and people associated with Newham
  • books and pamphlets on local history
  • historical local maps
  • electoral registers, trade directories, census returns and copies of some parish registers
  • local newspapers
  • photographs and illustrations including a selection of images from our collections at
We also have large collections of artefacts that are not on display, but you can make an appointment to see them. Our artefacts are also available for loan. 
Our museum collections include:
  • archaeological material
  • photographs
  • paintings
  • illustrations
  • maps.
And some of the highlights of our collections include:
  • pen and ink drawings by ‘Outsider Artist’ Madge Gill
  • a major collection of Bow porcelain.


Enquiry service

We can advise on records we hold that might be useful in your research.


You can photocopy items at the discretion of staff, where copying will not damage original material. Black and white copies cost 25p for A4 and 40p for A3.

Or if you wish to use your camera or other digital device to take copies there is a charge of £5 per day.

Copies of photographs and other images for private use are available from However we can also provide digital scans for other purposes including use in books and other publications, film, on television and the web. 

Microfilm readers and printers

We have readers for both microfilm and microfiche. Black and white A4 copies cost 30p.

Free internet and Wi-Fi

We provide free access to the Find My Past family history website and free Wi-Fi for your own digital devices.
