Re-registering a birth

Re-registration means making a new record in the birth register.

When to re-register a birth

A child's birth needs to be re-registered if:
  • details of the baby's father were not included at the original registration and one or both parents now wish to add them
  • the baby's parents have married since originally registering the birth.

You can't apply to re-register a birth if a mistake was made and the information is wrong, for exampleyou did not declare your marriage at the time of the initial registration. However you can apply for a birth registration correction. We charge a £20 admin fee for this correction service.

How to re-register a birth

Re-registration forms are available from any register office in England or Wales.
  • For re-registering a birth to include the natural father's details you should apply using Form GRO 185.
  • For re-registering a birth after marriage you should apply using Form LA1.
Once you have filled in the form you should return it to the register office of where the child was born. If the child was born in Newham, submit the form to:

Newham Registration Service
London Borough of Newham
207 Plashet Grove
East Ham
E6 1BT

Once we have received your completed form we will then contact you to advise if you need to arrange an appointment with a Registrar for the re-registration of the birth. We will supply you with a reference number which will enable you to make the booking online.

If you are unable to get to the register office in the district where the birth occurred, you can re-register at another register office by declaration and should take the application forms to the register office where you wish to be seen.

Most re-registrations can be authorised in the register office. Some applications have to be referred to the Registrar General for consideration, for example if a court order is involved or if the marriage took place outside England and Wales.

How much does it cost to re-register a birth?

There is no charge for re-registration, but you may wish to purchase a birth certificate from the new entry.
