What’s it all about?

Residents are being urged to nominate and celebrate the achievements of young, talented people in Newham who have been successful through their own hard work.

Newham Council, working with the Community Neighbourhoods, Young Mayor’s office and the Voluntary Sector Youth Service, is running the Newham Youth Achievement Awards. They are for young people aged 11-25 and will give the borough the opportunity to showcase their talents and achievements.

The Newham Youth Achievement Awards will take place on Friday 9 November at Newham Town Hall in East Ham. These new and brilliant awards will highlight young people’s achievements and contribution to the community. This year’s categories will include: sports, creativity, courage, community participation and making a difference; all categories are supported by local businesses.

We believe that this new and innovative type of celebration is vital for promoting the positive contribution of young people to our community, which has an impact on people’s feelings of safety and well-being, as well as tackling persistent negative depictions and labelling of young people. By promoting achievements and contributions, we hope to in turn encourage young people to make positive choices that help them avoid association with crime and anti-social behaviour.

The ceremony will include dinner and performances from talented local young people.

How are nominations shortlisted?

Nominations will be shortlisted to three and a winner will be selected by our judging panel, which includes a young person’s representative.

All shortlisted nominees will be invited to the awards event on Friday 9 November, and the winner will be announced at the event when the presentation is made.
