Nominations and training

If you wish to stand for Young Mayor of Newham, you must attend the training days. You will be given advice on writing your manifesto, public speaking, making a good first impression and building self confidence, campaigning and other skills. And you will receive media training in how best to present yourself for your video manifesto which you will produce on the day.

You will have a two-week campaigning period to convince other young people in Newham to vote for you. You can choose up to five people to join your campaigning team. We will give you personalised marketing materials including shirts, stickers and posters to help you promote your campaign.

Voting takes place on one day, with ballot boxes placed in local schools and colleges, Newham Town Hall and the Old Town Hall, Stratford.

Count and result

The votes are counted on the evening of the day following the vote at Old Town Hall Stratford. The results will be published on this website, and on both the Young Mayor’s Instagram and Twitter feed.

Due to limited space, attending the count is limited to those who have been involved in the elections either as candidates or campaigners. School teachers and family members are also welcome.

Term limits

The Young Mayor, Deputy Young Mayor and Youth Council may only serve one term of office (one year).

Teachers, employers and parents/guardians

Each school or sixth form can put forward up to two candidates. Once we have received all the Young Mayor nominations, we contact the schools and sixth form colleges to confirm who they wish to put forward.

It is important that the young person standing for election understands the commitment they are making and the amount of work involved.
We ask them to have an adult supporter so that we can be sure that they will have the help of an adult during their campaign and that they are able to do their duties if they are elected.
By signing the supporting statement, you are acknowledging that you will give advice and support to the candidate during their campaign.
Voting for Young Mayor of Newham is open to any young person between the ages of 11 and 18 but the Young Mayor candidates must be between the age of 14 and 18 on the day of the vote.

We expect you to have talked to your child/ward about the work involved in the role, before you sign the supporting statements. If they are elected, they will be expected to commit an average of two evenings or the equivalent amount of time per week to the role of Young Mayor.
