In Spring, the Government announced a £150 energy bills Council Tax rebate for most households living in a property in Council Tax bands A-D on 1 April 2022.
We are working hard to support residents and ensure they receive the energy bill council tax rebate as soon as possible. We have been updating our systems to allow us to make the payments as efficiently and accurately as possible, so that the right money is paid in to the right bank accounts, and we can properly account for it.
The rebate will not need to be repaid.
We apologise for the delay, we have been testing our systems and have identified and are fixing a number of technical problems. Some other councils have had problems in getting the right money to the right people and we want to avoid this by getting it right first time, which has unfortunately taken longer than we had hoped.
We have around 98,000 households to process for payment, 47,000 of which pay by direct debit. These Direct Debit households (where we have their correct details) should receive the rebate from the week commencing 6 June, 2022.
Residents who do not pay by direct debit will be contacted from late-June to begin the application process through a secure portal to safely give us their bank details. Details can be found on our payments for households who do not pay Council Tax by Direct Debit page. Given the high number of payments to be made it will take a number of weeks for all payments to be made.
Thank you for your co-operation. Remember, the Council will never telephone you to ask for your bank details – beware of scammers.
Households living in a property in council tax bands A-D on 1st April 2022 will receive the £150 council tax rebate.
This means about 9 out of 10 households in Newham will benefit, including around 95% of rented properties. However, second homes or empty properties will not benefit.
If you are unsure of your Council Tax band, check your latest Council Tax bill or at www.gov.uk/council-tax-bands.
The £150 energy grant Council Tax Rebate scheme will run until 30 September 2022.
If you are eligible, we will arrange to make payment as soon as we can and we are in the process of finalising the mechanisms for making payments.
What if my household isn’t eligible?
Newham has received just over £1million to provide support to vulnerable households who may not qualify for the £150 Council Tax rebate. This could include households living in property valued in bands E to H that are on income-related benefits or households who weren’t resident on the 1st April 2022.
We will update this page to provide more detail on how this discretionary scheme will operate once finalised.
The Discretionary Fund for this energy rebate will run until 30 November 2022.
