Together, we want to celebrate our unsung heroes.
Do you know an individual, group or organisation that is making a positive difference in our borough? We’d love to hear more and make sure they get the recognition they deserve.
This year’s Newham Civic Awards 2023 will recognise, celebrate and reward exceptional individuals, entrepreneurs, groups, organisations and companies who contribute to making our borough unique. Whether its supporting young people to get ahead or maintaining a community garden that has improved the area, tell us about those who deserve to receive a Civic Award for going truly above and beyond.
There are ten categories of award, as set out below, so when putting together your nomination, please consider the award category that best reflects the activities of your nominee.
The deadline to submit a nomination is 30 August 2023.
Successful award recipients and their guests will be invited to attend a celebratory event in December 2023 where the Mayor of Newham and Chief Executive will be in attendance.

However, before you do, please read the guidance, below, and in particular make sure that you’ve got a second nominator willing to say why they think your nominee should receive an award. We will need their contact details, as well as yours.
In 2023, we have sought to separate the awards we make to individuals from those made to groups, businesses and other organisations.

Awards for individual people
Alderperson Award |
The Alderperson Award is made to former Newham councillors, who have made an exceptional contribution to the borough and the council through their achievements whilst in office. The following criteria will be used by Newham’s Civic Awards Panel to form a view as to whether a nominee should be recommended to the council as an Alderperson: Candidates should have rendered eminent services by way of an exceptional contribution to the borough and the council (or its predecessors) through their achievements whilst in office. This could be demonstrated:
Candidates would normally be expected to have served at least two terms of office (eight years) as a councillor, though this need not be consecutively. Candidates would need to be able to command support across the political spectrum and respect in the community and work as a civic figure in an ambassadorial role. Nominees for the Alderperson award will normally be residents of the London Borough of Newham. However, there may be instances where a former councillor, who meets the criteria above, has moved away from the borough. In such circumstances, they would still be eligible for consideration for the award. |
Honorary Freedom of the Borough |
Honorary Freedom of the Borough is the most prestigious award the council can make to non-councillors. It is awarded sparingly to ‘persons of distinction’ and people who have made an exceptional contribution to the borough. The Freedom itself carries no privilege and is purely an honorific title.
Nominees for the Freedom of the Borough award are likely to be Newham residents. However, there are two categories within the award criteria where a nominee might not be a current Newham resident. The first of these is where a nominee was brought up in Newham and has made a significant contribution nationally to one of the following areas of activity: arts and culture, sport, the charity and voluntary sector, youth work or supporting vulnerable or older people, tackling social injustice, addressing environment concerns, the uniformed services or the civic service. The second criterion concerns leading international figures who, through their actions, would be seen as improving the wellbeing of a community of which a significant number live in Newham. |
The Good Neighbour Award |
The Good Neighbour Award recognises unsung heroes who have been caring for people in their local neighbourhood - for example by helping neighbours with errands, advice, support, companionship and friendship. Please note that the Good Neighbour Award is for individual residents of the London Borough of Newham. Groups and organisations should be nominated for the appropriate civic award. |
The Outstanding Contribution Award |
The Outstanding Contribution Award is aimed at individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to the social, cultural or environmental well-being of the borough and made Newham a better place to live. Please note that the Outstanding Contribution Award is for individual residents of the London Borough of Newham. Groups and organisations should be nominated for the appropriate civic award. |
The Youth Excellence Award |
The Youth Excellence Award supports the Council's aim to make Newham the best place for children and young people to grow up and reach their full potential. Please note that the Youth Excellence Award is for individual residents of the London Borough of Newham. Groups and organisations should be nominated for the appropriate civic award. |
Awards for groups or organisations
Community Wealth Builder Award |
The Community Wealth Builder Award is aimed at entrepreneurs, companies and organisations which have made a strong contribution to Newham’s economy. Through its economic plans, the council is seeking to ensure that economic activity and investment coming into Newham benefits all sections of the community and in particular, reduces inequality and poverty in the borough. Find out more on our Community Wealth Building page. Through the Community Wealth Builder Award, we are aiming not only to improve the wellbeing of current residents but also that of future generations. Please note that this award is for groups and organisations. Individual residents should be nominated for the appropriate civic award (e.g. the Outstanding Contribution Award). |
