Summer Reading Challenge 2020

The Summer Reading Challenge is back with Silly Squad!

We are excited to invite all children in Newham to join us for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. The annual challenge is delivered by The Reading Agency in partnership with public libraries and is funded by the Arts Council England.

This year’s theme is Silly Squad and is all about the joy of reading and having fun. The Silly Squad is the colourful creation of award-winning author and illustrator Laura Ellen Anderson.

  • Every year children who take part in The Summer Reading Challenge receive prizes and rewards for reading. Children who read 6 books over the summer receive a certificate and medal to celebrate their achievement.
  • Children can collect bags of pre-selected children’s books designed specifically for the challenge from any Newham Library. From the 27th of July you will be able to collect your Summer Reading Challenge collector pack and prizes when you borrow books from your local library.

Take part online

For the first time ever this year you will also be able to take part in the Summer Reading Challenge online.

The Silly Squad website is free to use and a place for children to rate and review their books and work towards their reading goal. It also is full of fun video content, games, quizzes, and digital and downloadable activities that children and families can enjoy together.

Visit newham.gov.uk/libraries to have a look at our amazing collection of e-books, e-audiobooks and e-comics that you can read as part of the challenge. If you’re not already a member of Newham Libraries you can also join the library at this website and gain instant access to all of our services.
