Notice of Casual Vacancy in East Ham Central Ward

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz has thanked Julianne Marriott who has announced she is standing down as a councillor for East Ham Central ward.

Councillor Marriott has been representing the ward since 2014 but will now be devoting herself to her new full-time job. She had announced at a meeting of the Council last month that she was standing down as Cabinet member for Education.

Mayor Fiaz said: “Councillor Marriott has been a key member of my administration since I stepped into office in May 2018, and I am proud of her achievements as the Cabinet member for Education since that time. Her relentless dedication to ensuring that the children and young people of this borough have the best education and enrichment opportunities through our schools has been her priority since taken on the role. While she is stepping down to devote herself fully to her new full-time job, I want to wish her well and to thank her for her commitment over the past six years to the residents of East Ham Central ward and Newham.”

Councillor Zulfiqar Ali, Cabinet member for Health and Adult Social Care, is taking forward the education portfolio as part of his responsibilities on an interim basis, continuing the work Councillor Marriott started, including improving educational provision for children and young people with special educational needs, school exclusions and issues of disproportionality in educational outcomes.

The notice of the casual vacancy in East Ham Central ward has been posted on the Council’s website here. If an election is called, it will take place at a future date in line with the provisions of the Coronavirus Act 2020, not before 6 May 2021.
