When will I get the £150?

The Government have announced a £150 energy bills Council Tax rebate for most households living in a property in Council Tax bands A-D on 1 April 2022. You can read our summary of the government information below and we will be shortly updating this page with further information about the rebate.

The rebate will not need to be repaid.

We cannot make any payments until after 1 April 2022 as we need to know who is liable for council tax on that day. If you are eligible, we will arrange to make payment as soon as we can after that date. If we do not have bank account details, for the person liable for council tax, this will take longer. Please do not contact us about this payment, we will be in touch with you. If you do not already pay by Direct Debit setting one up now will mean its quicker and easier to pay you this rebate.

Who’s eligible?

Households in council tax bands A-D will receive the £150 council tax rebate.

This means about 9 out of 10 households in Newham will benefit, including around 95% of rented properties. However, second homes or empty properties will not benefit. If you are unsure of your Council Tax band, check your latest Council Tax bill or at www.gov.uk/council-tax-bands.

How will my household get its £150?

  • For people who pay council tax by direct debit, in most cases, the rebate will go directly into bank accounts. If you don’t already pay by direct debit, you might want to sign up Pay through your bank – How to pay your council tax – Newham Council. This will make sure the rebate is paid to you quickly.
  • For those who do not pay Council Tax via Direct Debit, we will shortly provide details of how the rebate will be paid.  As the scheme has yet to start, please make sure that any communication asking you to provide payment details is from Newham before replying.

What if my household isn’t eligible?

  • Newham will receive just over £1million to provide support to vulnerable households who may not qualify for the £150 Council Tax rebate.
  • This includes people on low incomes in Council Tax Bands E-H.
  • We will shortly provide more detail on how this discretionary scheme will operate.
