Support Small Business Saturday this Christmas and help the community

Newham helps support Small businesses in the borough

Residents will be able to boost the local economy and support Newham’s small shops, family businesses, markets, small businesses and manufacturers, by taking part in Small Business Saturday on 7 December.

Small Business Saturday is a national campaign now in its seventh year. With an estimated £812m spent in small businesses across the UK last year, an increase of 8% on 2017, this year is set to be even more impressive.

Newham has many local businesses which are a world away from the busy malls, high street chains and supermarkets, which will be packed this festive season. The council’s new community wealth building approach is all about getting people to spend money locally, keep wealth in the borough, ensure that residents have the best possible opportunities, and encourage the creation of high skilled jobs and help and support residents into them.

In Newham on Small Business Saturday people have the chance to explore local businesses, enjoy the choice of tasty food and buy unusual Christmas gifts for loved ones. Local fare is diverse and includes everything from bakeries, coffee shops, bookstores and florists.

Jane Sherwood, Head of Economic Regeneration at Newham Council said: “Small businesses have a special place in every community and have loyal local customers who return time after time, but they need all of our support. Small Business Saturday is the perfect opportunity for our residents to get out there and see what they have to offer. It’s the perfect opportunity for entrepreneurs to shine and for residents to discover the benefits they bring locally. Shop local and keep the wealth in our community.”

Newham’s markets are also a great place to stop for shopping and presents this Christmas. Queens Market, next to Upton Park Station on Green Street is one of the most diverse in the borough. All markets in Newham are open from 9am to 6pm.
