About Shape Newham

Shape Newham was launched by Newham Council in 2019 to co-design and install 18 imaginative and original public space improvement projects across the borough.

Local residents and businesses were invited to a series of community events and workshops to choose the location and priorities for each project. The community co-design process led to a varied selection of projects including artist installations, upgraded street furniture, pocket parks, public realm enhancements and youth-led murals.

The first project was installed in Spring 2021 and installations have continued throughout 2021 and 2022.

You can stay updated on the progress of the projects by following Shape Newham on Twitter and Instagram.

Project locations

Shape Newham delivers on a commitment from the Council to invest in all parts of Newham, including places outside of major regeneration areas. The 18 installations are spread across eight areas: Beckton, East Ham, Forest Gate, Green Street, Little Ilford, Manor Park, Maryland and Plaistow.

A shortlist of possible project locations was initially drawn up by the Project Team in collaboration with Community Neighbourhood Managers, Ward Councillors and Regeneration Officers. Members of the community then had the opportunity to suggest additional sites at engagement workshops and by email. The final project locations in each area were decided based upon the preferences expressed by local residents during community co-design process.
