Green Street

Festival Square, Station’s Welcome and Candy Stones (Shape Newham)

Shape Newham launched in 2019 to co-design and install imaginative and original public space improvement projects across the borough. Local residents and businesses were invited to a series of community events and workshops to choose the location and priorities for each project.

At the community events, residents voted for a number of Shape Newham installations near to Upton Park Station – where Park Road and Crescent Road meet Green Street.

The installations are:

  • “Festival Square”, designed by AOC Architecture Ltd. The space and the adjacent areas of Crescent Road and Park Road have been re-designed around the idea of a flexible town square that can be used for public celebrations during festivals, while serving functional uses on a day-to-day basis. The reconfiguration of car parking creates additional public space for tree planting, seating and bike racks. The pedestrian area between Green Street and Crescent Street is made more attractive with new paving and street furniture. The design proposal is shown below:

  • “Station’s Welcome”, designed by Ed Crooks. This ornate gate and the surrounding paving has been designed to transform this junction providing a warm welcome to those using Green Street and Upton Park Station. The intricate metalwork is inspired by the history of ironworks in Newham and the use of bold and vibrant colours reflects patterns found in fabric for sale in the Green Street of today. • “Candy Stones”, designed by Sophie Percival. These playful and distinctive bollards have been designed to celebrate the identity of Green Street. The shapes, textures, and colours of these unique pieces of street furniture take inspiration from the large variety of confectionery found in local shops. By using shapes from the local environment these artworks seek to represent both the history and contemporary culture of Queen’s Market and Green Street. The design proposal is shown below:
