  • A series of events, workshops and coffee mornings will be available for residents to learn about suicide prevention;
  • Along with support for anyone who is struggling and needs mental, emotional and financial help.

A number of events will be taking place in Newham from 4-10 September, ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day on Sunday 10 September 2023. The events will be aimed at providing support and resources to individuals struggling with mental health issues – or anyone that has a loved one who may need some extra help.

Suicide prevention is a key priority for Newham Council and we remain committed to supporting people in our communities that are struggling. There can often be warning signs before an individual takes their own life and if we know how best to support people, everyone can play a role in saving lives.

Councillor Mumtaz Khan, Deputy Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care said: “Anyone who is feeling low, depressed or not their usual selves should know there are a range of support services available in Newham. It can often be a relief to open up and share feelings of worry or concern. Individuals will always be listened to.

“The Newham Suicide Prevention Strategy and Action Plan is a three-year approach aimed at reducing the local suicide rate and supporting those affected or bereaved by suicide. If you are struggling, please reach out. You are not alone.”

The Council is also working in partnership with Thrive LDN, which is a city-wide movement to support with mental health. Residents and staff are being encouraged to take up free, online training. The aim is to equip them with the knowledge and skills so they know what to do if a loved one, colleague or stranger is feeling suicidal.

The series of suicide prevention support and awareness events hosted by Newham Council will focus around the key issues that might lead to a suicide; from mental health problems, isolation or financial concerns.
