Statement by Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE following discovery of a man’s body at Council owned carpark in Stratford

I am appealing to anyone with information to urgently contact the police following today’s shocking discovery of a man’s body in Stratford Centre carpark, operated by Newham Council.

Understandably many local residents and businesses will be alarmed by the news, though the police have already arrested a man who is now in police custody.  As well as increased police presence in Stratford, there will also be additional community safety officers in the area to provide further reassurance to our local communities in the coming days.

The police are also working hard to identify the dead man’s next of kin; and my deepest condolences to his family and friends at what will be a very distressing time.  As the murder investigation continues, I am also being kept updated by our Chief Superintendent Simon Crick and council officers will continue assisting the police as required with their investigations.

Anyone who has information or material that could help police should call 101 ref CAD 4130/9 Jan.
