Newham Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz visited the site of the Council’s latest housing project where 65 new affordable homes for local families will be built in Plaistow .

The Mayor marked another milestone in the Council’s ambitious house-building programme by performing the ground breaking ceremony at Plashet Road, kicking off the building project that will see 65 homes and a community nursery due for completion by March 2023.

Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz said: “Today shows the solid progress being made in building affordable homes in Newham.

“I committed my administration would start the construction of 1,000 new council-owned homes by March 2022. It’s exciting the 65 new affordable homes here, available only to local people, will help deliver on that promise and Newham families will soon be able to move into the homes they deserve.

“Everyone has a right to live in a good quality home. I feel for local families, who really struggle to find suitable affordable housing. I’m proud that despite the challenges we’ve faced, these homes are being delivered.”

Neighbouring residents were fully consulted during the planning process and the Mayor admired the eye catching ‘Together We Create’ hoarding that celebrates the people of Newham.

The 1,000 homes make up the Affordable Homes for Newham programme to harness the building of high quality, energy efficient homes for the people who need them most. The new homes will be let at London Affordable Rent and will only be available to those on the Council’s housing waiting list, in accordance with its allocations policy. The Plashet Road project is being built by Bugler Developments.

The site of the new homes was previously occupied by One Love Community Association and the Upton Centre. The homes will be built to ambitious sustainability standards, with a reduced carbon footprint during both the construction process and when occupied – resulting in lower fuel bills for residents. The development will be car free, in accordance with Council policy; with but given the Council’s aspiration to allow for car parking for blue badge holders for residential units, residents will be allowed to apply for blue badge on-street parking as and when the need arises.
