Newham Council almost doubles available electric vehicle charging points in the borough in just one year

COP26

The Council is rapidly expanding the number of electric vehicle charging points throughout Newham to help tackle poor air quality and create a cleaner and greener borough.

Last November, the Council unveiled 80 new on-street electric charging points and is today announcing a further 60 lamp column charging units due to be operational by December 2021, to help support the transition of our residents and businesses to electric vehicles.

Discussions are also ongoing with potential funders and charge point operator partners to speed up this programme of delivery, with the potential for a further 500 chargers being delivered by the end of 2024, bringing the total electric vehicle points to around 640.

In addition to the ‘home charging’ electric vehicle points, the Council is also aiming to deliver further 20 rapid charger sites along main roads and at main destinations within the borough to make it easier for electric vehicle drivers to top up.

Councillor James Asser, Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Sustainable Transport, said:

“As world leaders gather to discuss action to fight global climate change at COP26, we are doing everything possible locally to tackle the climate crisis in our borough. Our Newham Climate Now programme is taking action against our poor air quality and we are doing all we can to build a cleaner and greener Newham.

“With more people looking to move to electric vehicles as part of their own efforts to become more sustainable, it’s imperative that we support our residents to make those changes.

“The availability of more on-street charging points across the borough gives drivers greater flexibility when considering greener vehicle choices and is just one way to help lower vehicle emissions in Newham. This is the second phase of electric vehicle chargers and in the borough with more to come.”

The two charge point providers in Newham are Allego BV (80 free-standing units) and Siemens Ubitricity (60 lamp column units) and their location can be viewed on the Council’s webpage www.newham.gov.uk/electricvehicles or by checking the Zap Map.

Allego operate 20,000 charge points in the UK and Europe, and Siemens-Ubitricity now operate over 1300 in London alone.
