Covid-19 Plan B: Keeping Newham Safe: Statement from the Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE

On Wednesday 8 December, the Prime Minister announced that England would move to ‘Plan B’ in response to the growth of the Covid-19 Omicron variant.

Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, said:

“Last night’s announcement from the government reinforces the messages about mask wearing and immunisation that we have consistently promoted throughout Newham in the last weeks.

“The new variant does pose a threat to our community and we must all act together to protect each other by wearing masks and getting fully immunised.”

“Tonight, we are holding a Well Newham Omicron Update from 5:30pm to share the latest information.  A panel of experts will also be on hand to take your questions.  Details are available online.

“We can be confident that vaccinations and top-up protection from boosters remain our strongest defence against the pandemic.  I got my Covid-19 booster last week at the Sir Ludwig Guttmann Health Centre in Stratford.  It was quick and easy – I urge you to get yours done and encourage those you know and love to get theirs done too.

“As well as building up our immune systems, we must continue to take regular Covid-19 tests.  These allow us to leave home confident that we’re not likely to spread the pandemic further, especially when we wear our masks.  I test myself regularly each week and suggest you do too.

“Finally, I appreciate that ordinary people who have done the right thing for the last 18 months may not welcome the government’s announcement. Our focus must be on what we can do to protect those we love. When we all work together, we can make a difference.  Together, we are Newham.”
