‘Care about Newham. Don’t dump rubbish’.

Newham Council is continuing to tackle illegal dumping with a reminder that if you ‘care about Newham, don’t dump rubbish’.

This reminder is the new theme of the Council’s hard hitting campaign which is targeting those who needlessly dump waste in Newham. The Council has been running the successful hard hitting campaign since December 2021 on local buses, across social media, on poster sites across Newham, in libraries as well as on a giant mobile billboard.

Newham’s Public Realm Engagement Team and Community Safety Enforcement Officers were in Forest Gate recently talking to residents about illegal dumping using the ‘waste box’ to show the scale of the issue.

The ‘waste box’ is a representation of just half the waste dumped every day in Newham and caught the eye of many residents, becoming a talking point on the issue of illegal dumping in Newham.

The campaign has called on residents to report illegal dumping and people have responded to that call with more people reporting fly-tips for the period December 2021 to March 2022, when compared with the same period last year as residents do their bit to help tackle the problem.

Additionally since the campaign launched we’ve seen a reduction in illegal dumping at some major dumping hotspots. The number of fly tips have almost halved in illegal dumping hotspots on Romford Road, High Street North and Green Street.

Cllr James Asser, Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Sustainable Transport, said:

“While we are seeing a reduction in illegal dumping at some hotspots, which is fantastic, we know we have to keep tackling the issue.

“Since December we have collected nearly 3,000 tonnes of illegally dumped waste.

“We want residents to keep reporting illegal dumping to us so we can clear the illegal dumping and also find and fine those who continue to dump in Newham.

“The vast majority of people dispose of their rubbish respectfully but there are some people who continue to dump and we are determined to stop them. Since the campaign launched we’ve issued over 130 fixed penalty notices to those who disrespect their neighbourhoods by dumping and currently investigating many more.

“It is great to see that this campaign is effective and working with residents we will continue to tackle illegal dumping In Newham. Our residents want clean streets and we are working hard to make that happen.”

Anyone can easily report dumped rubbish at love.newham.gov.uk or by using the Love Clean Streets phone app.
