Fire safety advice for summer

Fires can be devastating and recently we’ve seen many fires across Newham. An unattended BBQ, a carelessly dropped cigarette or even a glass bottle left lying on grass can cause terrible fires.

Let’s stay safe this summer by following some fire safety advice.

  • Make sure your cigarette is properly put out. Discarded cigarettes and matches are common causes of fires
  • Don’t leave glass bottles lying around in the sun, as they can start fires by magnifying the sun’s rays
  • Barbecue safely by not leaving your BBQ unattended. If using a disposable BBQ remember they can remain hot and be a fire risk after use, so take care when disposing of them
  • If having a BBQ keep a bucket of water or sand nearby. Never use petrol or paraffin
  • Do not BBQ in our parks and green spaces or anywhere where the grass is dry
  • At home make sure you have a smoke alarm and test it often.
  • Keep corridors and stairways free of clutter
  • Never leave cooking unattended
  • Do not overload plug sockets
  • Keep candles away from materials that may catch fire and don’t leave them unattended
  • London Fire Brigade have a useful Home Fire Safety Checker and lots of fire safety advice
