Banned dogs

Under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 you must not own, sell, breed, give away or exchange four breeds of dog:

  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Braziliero.

Penalties for owners

The maximum penalty for owning or keeping a banned dog is a fine of £20,000, six months in prison or both. Your dog could also be destroyed, and you may not be able to own another dog in the future.
