Noise from building and construction sites

There is a lot of building and construction work going on in Newham. Building companies must keep noise to a minimum and work within set hours unless we agree otherwise.

Set working hours for building and construction sites are:

  • 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday
  • 8am to 1pm on Saturdays
  • no work on Sundays or public holidays.

If noise from a building or construction site is causing you problems, report it using our online form.

If there is a large building site close to where you live or work, we can ask for noise and vibration to be checked throughout the project to make sure it stays within legal limits.

Noise from industrial machinery

If companies use machinery as part of their business, we can investigate any noise problems caused by that machinery.

Report any problems with noise from machinery, using our online form.

If we find that the noise is a nuisance, we can force the company running the plant to take action to stop the nuisance.

Noise from London City Airport

If noise from the airport causes you problems, we advise you contact the airport in the first instance.

However, if you are not satisfied by the response then contact the Council’s Airport Monitoring Officer at AirportMonitoring@newham.gov.uk.

Newham’s Planning Department have a legal agreement with London City Airport which sets out how the airport manage the noise it makes. It includes limits to flight numbers, operational times and numerous other noise mitigation measures to reduce the impact of noise.

The Airport Monitoring Officer is responsible for making sure that the airport keeps to the agreement. The airport publishes an annual performance report to demonstrate how it has done this. These Annual Performance Reports are published in June each year and can found on the London City Airport Environmental Management website

Noise from railways and railway building projects

Unfortunately, maintenance work is usually done out of hours when trains are not running, and staff can safely work on the track. We talk to the train companies regularly to make sure we know of any work, so we can reduce the effects on Newham residents. This may not be possible, however, if emergency works are necessary at short notice.

If noise from the railways or railway building projects cause you problems, report it using our online form.
