• Extended library opening hours till March 2024 providing a warm, inclusive, safe space for everyone

  • Warm Haven grants of up to £2,000 available to help voluntary sector partners offer Warm Havens

Libraries across Newham have once again become Warm Havens, providing safe, non-judgemental, warm spaces during the cold winter months as energy costs remain high.

Last winter’s Warm Havens initiative resulted in half a million visits to libraries between November 2022-March 2023. The extended opening hours in all libraries also enabled more people to go to them, resulting in an additional 7,000 new library memberships.

Newham Council have also announced the relaunch of a dedicated grants programme. This year, grants of up to £2,000 are available to voluntary, community and faith sector organisations who can support the borough’s response to the growing pressures of the cost of living. In particular, this is to help set up or support a Warm Haven provision. An additional feature this year is the support for Winter Warmer events. People can often feel lonelier and isolated during the winter, and the cost of living can make it harder to connect with others. Organisations can bid for up to £300 for events that bring people together to connect. For more information on the Warm Haven grants programme, visit www.newham.gov.uk/warmhavens

The Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, said: “We recognise residents are already struggling with high inflation. Even with the recent drop in the energy price cap, the cost of heating our homes and keeping warm still remains crippling high. With the weather set to get worse, sadly, people are going to be faced with the stark choice between heating their home or feeding their family. We are determined to help in any way we can to reduce this devastating burden.

“All 10 of our libraries will be open for longer hours till March 2024. Whatever your reason for visiting, our brilliant library staff will be on hand to provide a warm welcome, listen to your concerns, and, if needed, offer guidance on where to get help managing rising costs.”

As well as a warm welcome and advice, libraries also offer free Wi-Fi and a busy schedule of regular activities to suit all ages and tastes, from parent and toddler sessions, coffee mornings, code clubs, digital skills sessions, chess, knitting and much more. Anyone interested should visit their local library or www.newham.gov.uk/libraries.
