Help Newham Council create a more Liveable Neighbourhood in Custom House

Newham Council wants residents to help design a better Custom House in order to create healthier, safer, more attractive streets to make people want to ditch their cars and choose healthier more sustainable ways of getting around.

The Liveable Neighbourhoods programme is funded by Mayor of London and Transport for London to help introduce projects that aim to reduce car trips and improve neighbourhoods for walking, cycling and public transport. Projects can look at a range of different ways to create healthy and active streets. These may include improving cycling networks, redesigning junctions, upgrading crossings and creating more attractive walking routes.

In autumn 2018, Newham Council submitted a bid to Transport for London (TfL) for a Liveable Neighbourhood proposal for the Custom House area. The bid was successful and Newham Council was awarded £135,000 to look at how it can make walking and cycling safer and easier, and improve the general street environment in the area. This initial funding will allow the council to identify local priorities and opportunities for improvements.

To make sure it can plan and deliver the best and most effective schemes, Newham Council is engaging with local residents, businesses, schools and community groups to get a better understanding of the key issues. The Council will also listen to their ideas and views to help shape proposals for the Custom House Liveable Neighbourhood.

Councillor Sarah Ruiz, ward member for Custom House, said: “This is a brilliant opportunity for the people of Custom House to help shape their future environment. It’s a chance to have a genuine voice in helping to create safer, greener and more appealing place, which encourages healthy living as well as safer and less polluting transport.”

For those that want to be a part of this exciting and challenging project there are a number of ways to get involved.

Visit the interactive map and simply add comments and suggestions for improvements. Residents will also be encouraged to share a little information about where they live, work and current methods of getting around.

There are also opportunities for residents to meet with officers face-to-face to share ideas about what would make a more Liveable Custom House.

The meetings are:

  • Tuesday 10 September, 10am - 1pm at Canning Town Library, Rathbone Market, 18 Barking Road, E16 1EH
  • Thursday 12 September, 2pm - 5pm at The Old Post Office, 25 Freemasons Road, E16 3AR
  • Tuesday 17 September, 10.30am - 1.30pm at Custom House Library, Prince Regent Lane, London E16 3JJ
  • Wednesday 18 September, 12pm - 3pm at Canning Town Library, Rathbone Market, 18 Barking Road, E16 1EH

Towards the end of the year, the council will use the feedback to prepare a report outlining its proposals. This report will be presented to TfL so that we can seek further funding to implement our proposals.
