Newham Mayor and Cabinet 'clean up' after previous administration

At a meeting to be held by Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz and her new Cabinet tomorrow (Tuesday 5 June) she and her members will be considering items left over by the previous administration.

The items being discussed are:

  • Rescinding the award of £661,920k of funding from the Stratford City Section 106 agreement to Memorial Recreation Ground, for a new synthetic pitch. This follows on from councillors Seyi Akiwowo, James Beckles, Rokhsana Fiaz and Veronica Oakeshott, who were previous members of the Overview and Scrutiny Commission submitting  a request  to "call-in” the decision after it was approved by the previous Mayor Sir Robin Wales and his Cabinet. The call-in request raised concerns around the appropriateness of allocating a significant amount of money to this project and that significant monetary decisions should be postponed until after the local elections; as any incoming new administration, would want to determine spending priorities.
  • Varying the lease on a pocket of land in the south of the borough to allow the development of a new free school at Royal Wharf in Royal Docks. Royal Wharf was given planning permission in 2012 and it will comprise of a comprehensive mixed use development with up to 3,385 homes, retail, financial and professional and leisure services. As part of the Section 106 Agreement a new primary school and nursery would also be built to for the new families in that area.
Mayoral proceedings is also held on the same day, and will see the Mayor announce her appointments to outside bodies.

She will also make decisions on:
  • a contract of up to £98million for catering, cleaning and providing  ground maintenance services for  the borough’s schools
  • procuring occupational therapy services to meet growing demand
  • whether the council should adopt Marshgate Lane in Stratford which forms one of the routes to the London Stadium and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Mayor Fiaz’s first Cabinet where she will bring forward her proposals as the new mayor will be held in July.
