Under the Stars outdoor music concerts returns this August to Central Park, East Ham to offer residents four nights of free live musical entertainment.

Newham Council’s free outdoor music spectacular Under the Stars returns for 2017. Details of the stellar line-up can now be revealed.

 

Thursday 17 August

DADDY ERNIE hosts the opening night. He has graced the UK airwaves for more than 30 years as Choice FM’s flagship reggae DJ and on Vibes FM.

  

The first evening of Under the Stars will be headlined by pop reggae
supremo PATO BANTON performing tunes such as “Baby Come Back”.

He will perform at 9.45pm.

​This year a special guest DJ slot is being introduced for DADDY G, founding member of trip hop outfit Massive Attack.




Horace Andy and Daddy G

He will be performing at 9.15pm.

HORACE ANDY AND THE MAFIA AND FLUXY BAND will also be lighting up the stage. Horace is often described as one of the most respected and influential artists in Jamaica. He is known for his distinctive haunting vocals and hit songs such as “Government Land”, “Angel” and “Five Man Army”. He has also collaborated with mega-selling English artists Massive Attack.




They will be performing at 8.15pm.

TIPPA IRIE, known for hit single “Hello Darling” will open the evening. He first came to prominence in the early eighties and is best known for his hit singles “It’s Good To Have The Feeling You’re The Best” and “Hey Mama” with The Black Eyed Peas. Expect fabulous reggae hits alongside tracks from his new album.

He will be performing at 7.00pm. 

  




 
 

Friday 18 August

Friday evening will be hosted by BBC Asian Network’s NADIA ALI with special guest DJ VIX.

Topping the bill on Friday night is one of the most popular and respected Bhangra entities of all time, APNA SANGEET. Headed by lead vocalists Kulwant Singh Bhamrah and Sardara Singh Gill, they are considered one of the most energetic and entertaining duos in the world of Bhangra music

They will be performing at 9.45pm. 

ARJUN is a London-based singer, songwriter and music producer. He has become known for his fusion of contemporary Western and Eastern sounds, combining soulful R&B with elements of South Asian music.

  

He will be performing at 8.50pm. 

We will also be welcoming EPIKA DANCE to the stage. They are a Bollywood fusion troupe of energetic and dynamic people from different backgrounds who have come together over their love of Bollywood Dance.

They will be performing at 8.35pm. 

  



SONA WALIA is undoubtedly one of the biggest female bhangra artists in the world and certainly the best artist residing outside of India. Sona‘s sets consist of colourful costumes and  high energy performances, that leave audiences spellbound.
 
She will be performing at 8.10pm.

Before this, FARAZ KHAN will take to the stage. Faraz is the UK’s No.1 Bollywood entertainer. Coming from a film background, he has had vocal training from his uncle, who worked for the Bollywood industry in the 80s and 90s as a playback singer.

He will be performing at 7.50pm.

 

The night will open with CHAND ALI KHAN QAWWAL & PARTY. They are an UK based Sufi Qawwali Group from Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Memorial Academy who have performed in cultural and music festivals across the UK and Europe.

They will be performing at 7.00pm. 

 

 

Saturday 19 August

Saturday night will be hosted by Heart FM’s presenter ROBERTO.

  

Headlining Saturday night is one of the most fabulous girl groups of all-time - the incredible THE THREE DEGREES. Known for their soulful voices, beautiful gowns, and fabulous stage shows, they are legendary all around the world for songs like “When will I see you again”, and “Take Good Care Of Yourself”.

They will be performing at 9.30pm.

  


Soul diva RUBY TURNER, who is currently fronting Jools Holland’s band, will also take to the stage. To date, Ruby has released 17 albums and has appeared on releases with the likes of Brian Ferry, UB40, Steve Winwood and Mick Jagger.

The evening will open with the fabulously soulful EDWIN STARR BAND featuring ANGELO STARR. Edwin Starr Band featuring Angelo Starr is our opening act for Saturday. Expect to hear scorchers like ‘Agent 00 Soul’ and ‘Higher & Higher ’.

They will be performing at 7.00pm.

 

Sunday 20 August

Children from Newham’s Every Child a Musician programme, known as the ECaM STARS ORCHESTRA, will open the evening of flag-waving and singing with a wonderful performance.

They will be performing at 7.10pm.

One of the world's leading orchestras, the ROYAL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA will once again return to Central Park to play an open-air concert full of high quality classical music. Welcoming back John Rigby as conductor, the orchestra will perform popular tracks such as Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty Waltz”, Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess: Summertime”, Strauss’s “Die Fledermaus Overture” as well as regular favourites. The orchestra will be accompanied by the thrilling operatic voices of mezzo-soprano Melanie Marshall and bass-baritone tenor Rodney Earl Clarke.

They will be performing from 7.45pm.

Sunday night will conclude with a spectacular FIREWORKS GRAND FINALE.

  • There is no public parking onsite; limited blue badge parking available in the park (weather permitting).
  • Visitors are encouraged to walk or use public transport.

Buses: 58, 10, 104, 115 and 474 to Central Park (East Ham/White Horse) and 5, 147, 238, 300 and 325 to Barking Road (High Street North/Newham Town Hall).
  • Bikes are not permitted at Under the Stars. Bike racks are available in Central Park.
  • Food stalls and bar available on site. You can bring your own food and drink, but no glass bottles or other sharp objects are allowed.
  • You will be searched as a condition of entry.
  • Anyone bringing unsealed plastic bottles or baby bottles into the park will be asked to open it and taste the contents in front of security personnel before entering. If you are unwilling to do this, it is unlikely you will be permitted to enter.
  • This event takes place on grass.
  • No dogs allowed (except assistance dogs).​
