Storing building materials on the street

When you carry out building work, you must not store materials on the street without a licence.

Cost of a licence to store materials on the street

You can store materials on the street for a short time if the council says you can, but there might be conditions. The fee is:

  • £62 per week (or part of a week) for up to 14 days
  • £76 per week after the 14 day period.

You may not put materials in a designated parking space unless our Parking Control Service agrees to this in writing. To contact the Parking Control Service, email

If you do store materials on the street without a licence you may get a fixed penalty fine of £100 or, in more serious cases, you may be prosecuted.


When storage of materials on the street is not allowed

Sometimes we will not give permission to store materials on certain roads. Normally these roads are main roads and bus routes. Our officer will decide whether to give you permission.
