Keep Your Child Safe Around Windows

Preventing Falls, Protecting Lives

Every year, children are injured or killed due to falls from windows—let’s work together to stop this.

Falls from windows are a serious risk to young children—especially during warmer months when windows are often left open. These accidents can happen in seconds but are entirely preventable with a few simple steps.

Why It Matters

Children are naturally curious and may climb or lean near windows without understanding the danger. Even low-level windows pose a risk.

Simple Steps to Keep Children Safe

  • Keep windows closed or use child safety locks, especially in warmer weather.
  • Limit window openings to no more than 4 inches (10 cm) when children are present.
  • Move furniture away from windows to prevent climbing.
  • Install window restrictors or safety catches.
  • Stay aware - supervision is key to preventing accidents.

Seasonal Safety: Staying Well in Hot Weather

When a heat-health alert is issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), it’s important to remember that hot weather can be dangerous—especially for young children, older adults, and people with existing health conditions.

One key risk during warmer months is the increased likelihood of falls from open windows. As temperatures rise, windows are often left open for ventilation, which can pose a serious danger to children.
