How Newham Council uses AI
Newham Council uses digital technology, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), to help deliver better, fairer and more efficient services for residents. We are committed to being open about how and where AI is used in our services.
What we mean by AI
AI refers to tools that help analyse information, spot patterns, or generate content to support staff. It is used to assist people doing their jobs, not to replace them.
AI is used to support staff, for example by helping analyse information, manage workloads, and reduce repetitive administrative tasks. This allows council officers to focus more time on complex cases and direct support.
AI tools do not make final decisions about residents. Decisions that affect people’s rights or access to services are always made or reviewed by trained council officers, who remain fully accountable for outcomes.
How AI supports our services
AI may be used in ways such as:
- Analysing service data to understand trends, demand and performance.
- Helping staff prioritise work or highlight cases that may need attention sooner.
- Summarising information or drafting responses to support administrative tasks.
- Supporting meeting notes or writing up assessments before being reviewed by a case worker.
- Improving reporting so services can plan and allocate resources more effectively.
These tools support decision-making but do not replace professional judgement.
