People Powered Places

The Big Vote

From 21 October until 12 November 2023 you can decide how funding is spent in your neighbourhood as part of the People Powered Places: The Big Vote.

Why your vote matters

People Powered Places is one of the country’s largest participatory budgeting programmes, supporting 157 projects over the last two years while strengthening the partnership between the Council and residents.

The Big Vote helps to ensure that projects and programmes are best suited for residents who live, work or learn across Newham’s communities – a unique opportunity to choose who receives funding with a public vote.

Results from this year’s voting period will see £1.6 million allocated across 8 Community Neighbourhoods in a single round – with £200,000 available for each Community Neighbourhood, with additional funding of £80,000 between Beckton & Royal Docks and Custom House & Canning Town from the Royal Docks Team.

What are you voting for?

Earlier this year, residents from across Newham gathered for Our Solutions events, creating more than 700 project ideas to address the priorities in their Community Neighbourhood.

Between 20 June and 10 September, applications were open for anyone who lives, works or learns in Newham to apply for funding. Residents could apply for up to £5,000, while voluntary, community and faith sector organisations could apply for up to £20,000.

A total of 360 project applications were received across Newham and in September, working group members and council officers shortlisted the project applications that met the funding criteria and addressed local priorities.

Following shortlisting, local projects will be subject to this year’s ‘The Big Vote’.
