LGBT+ History Month 2024

Newham Council launches its borough wide LGBT+ History Month 2024 programme from the 1 February.

Highlights include an inclusive swimming session at the London Aquatics Centre, a talk with world-renowned artist Sunil Gupta, a queer heritage workshop with Dan Glass, and celebratory party produced by Social Convention, plus much more talks, film screenings and workshops.

This years’ theme explores medicine and health in the LGBT+ community, will offer insights and education, as well as holistic workshops for connection and empowerment. For further information and to book visit www.newhamlgbthistory.org

Event: LGBT+ History Month Flag Raising and Launch
Date and Time: 1st February, 3pm – 5pm
Location: East Ham Town Hall
Information: Join Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE and Councillors to raise the official LGBT+ flag and launch Newham’s LGBT+ History Month. Followed by refreshments and an opportunity to network. No booking required.

Event: TAGs Swimming Session
Date and Time: 3rd February, 5-7pm
Location: Aquatics Centre
Information: TAGS is a community initiative created to support the trans community into swimming. Come swim in the inspiring Aquatics Centre on the Olympic Park in this inclusive, open swimming session. Your ticket will get you a third off your first drink at local venue Tina We Salute You, if you fancy socialising post swim.

Event: Queer Life Drawing Class
Date and Time: 8th February, 6:00-7:30pm
Location: Canning Town Library
Information: Join us at Canning Town Library for an art-filled evening led by Queer Life Drawing Conversation. In addition to drawing life models, focus is given to developing conversations about nudity, sexuality and queer theory in relation to queer bodies and sexual health.

Art materials and refreshments provided. You are welcome to join in drawing, posing and contributing to the conversation.

Event: Sunil Gupta: Queer Radicalism, Photography and Archives
Date and Time: 13th February, 6:30-8:00pm
Location: Applecart Arts
Information: Join artist and photographer Sunil Gupta in conversation, exploring the themes of art and activism. Gupta is an internationally renowned photographer, whose work explores the themes of sexual identity, injustice and health.

Event: Bender Defender’s Martial Arts Workshop
Date and Time: 17th February 2024, 10am – 12:30pm
Location: East Ham Town Hall
Information: Bender Defenders is a s a queer and trans community empowerment, Muay Thai and self-defence training movement. Born out of the Queer Night Pride Demonstrations, they provide community martial arts classes that aim to help participants release emotion, get fit, and connect with others.

Feel the benefit of martial arts and movement in this self-defence class, followed by refreshments and an opportunity to network with others.

Event: Crafting Connections: LGBTQ+ Creativity Workshop
Date and Time: 24th February, 2-4pm
Location: Stratford Library
Information: Dive into the world of self-discovery and artistic expression in this inspiring workshop tailored for the LGBTQ+ community. You’ll develop sewing skills and design your own cushion cover, while participating in games and discussions to create connection.

Event: Documenting LGBT+ History with Dan Glass
Date and Time: 28th February, 6:30 – 9:00pm
Location: Stratford Town Hall
Information: Dan Glass is an author, performer, and educator who’s work explores activism, social justice and the history of the LGBTQI+ community. His latest book, ‘Queer Footprints’, takes you through the city streets to uncover the scandalous, hilarious and empowering events of London's queerstory.

Event: LGBT+ History Month Celebration with Social Convention
Date and Time: 2nd March, 7:00-12pm
Location: Old Town Hall Stratford
Information: LGBTQ+ History Month celebrates the vast contributions of Queer people, delving into the archive of times gone by, and the history being made today. The 2024 theme celebrates the LGBTQ+ peoples’ contributions to the field of Medicine and Healthcare, and the NHS. This theme also aims to highlight the communities experiences of receiving healthcare, and the complicated inequalities LGBTQ+ people face within this, past and present.

Produced by Social Convention, this event brings to life the rich history of LGBTQ+ people in Medicine, and invites you to an evening of storytelling, immersive cabaret, ballroom and drag. Eventbrite tickets
