Windrush Day marks the anniversary of the arrival of the MV Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks on 21 June 1948 with over 500 people from the Caribbean answering the call to help rebuild post-war Britain

Emerge: A Windrush Dance Workshop (11yrs+), Saturday 15 June, 12-1pm, Canning Town Library

Leading up to Newham’s June 22nd celebration, Step & Praise Performing Arts invites residents to an immersive Caribbean dance workshop for both adults and young people. This workshop will delve into the rich cultural heritage as participants learn traditional dance steps and simultaneously create art pieces inspired by the essence of Caribbean dance.

At the heart of Step and Praise’s mission is the belief in the transformative power of the arts to inspire, educate, and unite communities. Through their engaging workshops, classes, and performances, they provide opportunities for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to explore their creativity, develop their talents, and build confidence.

Windrush Day Fair, Saturday 22 June 2-5pm, East Ham Town Hall (outdoors)

Windrush Day Fair will feature local business stalls, art workshops by Antonietta Torsiello and Sakafet London, family storytelling sessions with Paula David and Discover Children’s Story Centre, and live music by a local steel pan band Pan Vibrations. Ms Suzy Wong will also be spinning beloved Caribbean tunes all afternoon, while local vendors offer delicious island cuisine for purchase.

Chief Executive of Newham, Abi Gbago, will be saying a few words at 3pm.

Island Rhythms: A Windrush Showcase with Carroll Thompson, Saturday 22 June 5-7pm, East Ham Town Hall (Main Hall)

Held in the historic main hall of East Ham Town Hall, Newham presents a showcase including music and dance performances by talented young artists from Step & Praise Performing Arts and Newham Music. The show will begin with a captivating performance by the Queen of Lover’s Rock, Carroll Thompson. Hosted by Russeni Fisher, it promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Caribbean culture and heritage.

Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz will open the event.
