Newham Centre for Health and Care Equity

In her manifesto, Mayor Fiaz committed to establishing a centre of excellence on equality in Health and Social Care.

To deliver this, the Council is bringing together people from Newham community, voluntary and faith groups, universities including University College London, University of East London, Queen Mary University London, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, local health organisations including Newham Health Collaborative, North East London Integrated Care System, and community members.

Together we are working to build the Newham Centre for Health and Care Equity. Our aims are:

  1. To understand better the ways in which health inequalities manifest in daily life and in particular how policy and practice inadequately addresses these and at times perpetuates them
  2. To create a space where both local authority, NHS, voluntary and others, partner with our communities to develop and adapt our approaches to address these gaps and assess their effectiveness and build capacity in the process working in collaboration with academia
  3. To generate actionable insights that can influence policy and practice to tackle inequalities
  4. To learn from what we are doing locally, share the learning beyond Newham, to influence and support change more widely and be part of a wider learning community which informs our own approaches
  5. To support our community to be actively involved in this process through co-production, capacity building and involvement in decision making

We will do this in three ways:

  1. Transforming the relationships between academics, public sector staff and community groups to integrate academic rigour and practice expertise better with each other
  2. Writing up and sharing the work that we are doing in ways that make a difference to our practice locally, helps others improve their work and influences policy
  3. Deliver specific programmes and projects to improve equity in the experience and outcomes for people from health and care services
