If you are receiving care and support and enter prison or custody, you still have the right to live with dignity and independence. Support continues to be available to help you manage your health and wellbeing.
What you can expect
Your care needs will still be assessed and met by the local authority where the prison is located. This includes support with personal care, mobility, and managing health conditions, just as you would receive in the community.
You’ll be involved in decisions about your care, and advocacy should be available to help you express your views if needed.
Support for carers
If you are a carer for someone who is in prison, your role and responsibilities may change. You may also need support to manage your own wellbeing.
To request an assessment for someone in prison, referrals must be made via the prison. The person in custody can refer themselves by asking prison officers or prison healthcare professionals
Carers can also access mental health and advocacy services to help navigate this change and continue providing support in a way that works for them.
Planning for the future
As you prepare for release, your local council you are returning to will work with you, your family and other services to make sure your care continues smoothly, whether you're returning home or moving somewhere new.
Need support whilst in prison?
Speak to a prison officer or healthcare staff. They can refer you to the adult social care team.
