Before you start your tenancy
It is important to know your rights and responsibilities and the responsibilities of your landlord before signing your tenancy agreement.
Before you start your new tenancy make sure you:
- Check that the property is licensed and you have a copy of the licence
- Get a written tenancy agreement from your landlord and make sure you read and understand its terms and conditions
- Inspect the property thoroughly and send details and photos of any damage or faults to your landlord
- Have the correct contact details for your landlord and that they have yours
- Provide references.

Camden Private Renters Week – 16–21 March 2026
Camden Council is hosting Private Renters’ Week from 16–21 March 2026, offering a programme of free online evening webinars 6-7pm and in‑person events designed to support private renters across the borough.
Throughout the week, residents can join a series of online webinars covering key topics such as:
- Your tenancy is changing on 1 May 2026 – what does this mean?
- Understanding rent increases for private renters
- Supporting students in private rented accommodation
- Repairs, responsibilities and your rights
- Your rights as a private renter – discrimination, rental bidding and pets
Renters are also invited to drop in to a free Private Renters’ Fair on Saturday 21 March 2026, 11am–4pm at the Crowndale Centre, 218 Eversholt Street, NW1 1BD. They can stop by to get expert advice, ask questions, and connect with organisations supporting private renters. Refreshments will be provided.
