Newham Council announces celebration programme for King’s Coronation

• Wide selection of events organised for residents to celebrate the King’s Coronation from 27 March to 13 May.

People across Newham who want to bring their local community together to mark the coronation of King Charles III in May are being given a helping hand by Newham Council.

The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, the Queen Consort, will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023, and events are being planned across the borough to mark the momentous occasion. From creative school competitions, community festivals and displays of archived coronation materials, there will be plenty to suit all tastes.

As well as supporting those looking to organise street parties over the coronation weekend and special Bank Holiday on 8 May, the Council is providing grants of up to £500 to the over 100 grant applicants.

Activities and events to mark the King’s Coronation will include:

Creative school competition - Monday 27 March to Monday 17 April 2023

Primary and Secondary school students across Newham will have the opportunity to showcase their creative skills around the theme ‘King’ for a chance to win individual and school prizes. The competition is supported by Westfield East Bank Creative Futures Fund, funded by Westfield Stratford City and delivered by Foundation for Future London. Running from 27 March to 17 April, the winners will be invited to collect their prizes from Mayor Fiaz at the Big Help Out festival on May 8.

Display showcasing coronation materials from the archives - Tuesday 2 May to Friday 12 May

A display will be available at East Ham Library which consists of items from Newham’s museum collections that look at the history of coronation celebrations in the borough. Items going on display will include souvenir booklets and programmes, medals awarded to residents who participated in local coronation activities, and souvenirs such as handkerchiefs and stamps. In addition to the display, you will find photographs from Newham’s archives depicting local coronation celebrations throughout the decades viewable at all Newham libraries.

Newham libraries activities - Tuesday 2 May to 13 May 2023

All Newham libraries will provide an extensive range of activities for children and young people, which will include author events, creative writing workshops, STEM activities and much more.

King’s Coronation public broadcasting at libraries - Saturday 6 May

Libraries will be open on the coronation day, May 6 and will air the live broadcast of the coronation ceremony according to the broadcasting schedule.

Community events and street parties - 7 May to 10 May

Throughout the coronation weekend, local communities in the borough will host over 100 celebratory events from street parties to garden parties. These events will be organised by various communities with support from Newham Council via the King’s Coronation Grant and the Eden Project, which will offer free training and guidance on hosting street parties, lunches and other community events.

Neighbourhood Parties - 7 May to 10 May

Neighbourhood street parties will be held across the borough by the council and will offer local residents the opportunity to come together, connect and get to know each other as they mark the coronation of King Charles III. There will be plenty of food, music and live entertainment that reflect the diversity of Newham.

The Big Help Out festival - Monday 8 May

The council will host the Big Help Out festival to mark the coronation of King Charles III by celebrating and recognising volunteering in Newham. The Big Help Out is part of Buckingham Palace’s campaign to highlight the positive impact volunteering has on communities. During this event, residents can find out about volunteering opportunities across the borough.

Deputy Lieutenant Kim Bromley- Derry Esq CBE DL and Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz, will plant an Oak tree at Central Park in recognition of volunteering in Newham.

Coronation Tea Party - Tuesday 9 May

The Coronation Tea party will offer residents of all ages an opportunity to try different dances such as tango, waltz, cha-cha-cha and quick step. There will be a raffle, and a special afternoon tea will be served.  This will be held on Tuesday 9 May from 12.30 to 4.30pm at Old Town Hall Stratford. Booking will be required to attend this event.
