Abi Gbago starts her role as Newham Council’s new permanent Chief Executive today.

Following a robust recruitment process that concluded in July 2023, when councillors approved the appointment at a meeting of Full Council, Abi Gbago starts her role as Newham Council’s new permanent Chief Executive today.

From day one, Abi will be working with Mayor Fiaz and her executive to accelerate delivery of the administration’s Building a Fairer Newham agenda and urgent priorities including the Council’s ‘A Clean Borough’ campaign and the robust financial management required in the face of growing pressures on council services and the ongoing impact of the cost of living crisis facing Newham residents.

An innovative and dynamic strategic leader, Abi Gbago has extensive experience in local government. In her role as the Council’s new Chief Executive, she will be leading the Council’s leadership and staff teams to deliver radically improved outcomes for Newham residents. Underpinned by her commitment to the Council’s Building a Fairer Newham vision for the borough, she will be mobilising the Council to deliver best in class council services for Newham residents.

In the coming weeks, the Council’s new Chief Executive will be meeting with elected Members, residents and local partners to discover first-hand the challenges and opportunities facing the borough.
