On Friday 22 September 2023, Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE cut the ribbon to officially open the new hub at the Canning Town estate. The hub is the very first step to be delivered as part of the overarching Canning Town estate regeneration plan, which will look to provide around 1,300 new and improved homes, public spaces and community facilities for the residents of Canning Town estate long term.

Alongside the new hub, Newham Council is already progressing with preparations to start the construction of 147 genuinely affordable homes at social rent, next to the hub at the Vincent Street site location. In total 45% of these homes are 3, 4 and 5-bedroom homes.

Mayor Fiaz said: “I promised to deliver an improved Canning Town estate that will meet the various needs of all our Canning Town estate residents, a place where they will be proud to call home, shaped with their full input through our co-design process. I am extremely pleased today to have opened the hub, that showcases our commitment to making our ambitious plans for the estate come true.

“The hub is a symbolic building that will continue to build on our co-design process with residents, adding to the 103 community engagement activities that we have done since July 2022. It will not only be used as a place to find updates about the progress of our exciting regeneration plans but will be also available for local residents and businesses to support, educate and improve the local community.”

The new community hub at Canning Town estate will be a location for residents to come together and develop new skills. Regular activities will continue including co-design sessions, coffee mornings, and resident steering group meetings whilst also serving as a general regeneration information hub with regular drop-ins from other Newham service areas to improve residents’ lives.

Local residents and businesses will also have the opportunity to host events and activities at the hub at various given times.

Off the back of the successful summer engagement programme, there will be an autumn activity programme announced shortly allowing residents to enhance the hub through community planting, children’s painting, and carpentry workshops.
