Students in Newham are celebrating after achieving their A level and BTEC results this year.
Over 1,300 young people sat A level exams in the borough this summer, and provisional results released on Thursday 16 August show some great achievements from the borough’s young people.
Newham has continued to perform above the England average at higher A level grades, achieving a six per cent increase in A*- A grades compared to last year, and a borough average of 34 percent A*- A grades compared to the England average of just over 26 per cent.
Over 60 per cent of all A Level students in the borough achieved A*-B grades, which represents an 11 per cent increase on last year’s results.
And, 80 per cent of Newham’s A level students achieved A*-C grades this year, which is an increase of 11 per cent compared to last year.
The overall Newham provisional pass rate (A*-E grades) was 98 per cent, which is equivalent to the England average.
Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz and Councillor Julianne Marriott, Cabinet Member for Education visited NewVic College as the students collected their results for their A levels and BTEC.
The Mayor and Cllr Marriott were met by Eddie Playfair the principal of NewVic college and the following three outstanding students who will be going on to university in September.
Eddie Playfair said: “It has been an amazing journey to have been here for ten years and see so many of my students go on to succeed. We have gone from strength to strength and our results continue to improve. This year we have achieved our best results ever and it means our young people can realise their ambitions. We have high expectations for our students and our staff instil a faith in our young people that they can achieve. I am very proud of the hard work of our students and staff.”
Across the borough, some of the highlights from Newham’s schools and colleges are.

- Hanson Anthony Fernandes, who will be going to University College London to study information management for business after receiving distinctions in his Level 3 Extended Diploma in Business BTEC.
- Ifeoluwa Oluwayomi will be going to Manchester University to study geology after obtaining an ‘A’ in maths, ‘B’ in chemistry and ‘B’ physics. She wants to stop mineral exploitation and hopes her degree will allow her to work with companies to find more sustainable solutions to fossil fuels.
- Abed Mosa-Al-Refaee received an ‘A*’ and two ‘As’ in further maths and physics and is awaiting confirmation of his place at Cambridge’s Trinity College to study engineering. His story is even more astounding as he has only been in the UK for two years after growing up in Syria as a refugee.

- Students at St Angela’s Ursuline School Sixth Form achieved 84% A*-C grades
- NewVic students achieved 65% A*-C grades
- Students at St Bonaventure’s Catholic School Sixth Form achieved 64% A*-C grades
- Students at Chobham Academy Sixth Form achieved 61% A*-C grades
Three Newham institutions achieved well above the England Average for higher grades:
- London Academy of Excellence achieved over 59% A*- A grades
- Brampton Manor Academy achieved 93% A*-B grades
- Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre achieved 90% A*-B grades
