Be Bin Day Ready - Newham residents urged to sort rubbish carefully as recycling collections double across the borough

New Weekly Recycling, rubbish, recycling, weekly pic ups

• From 4 December weekly recycling collections will be introduced
• These will help improve the environment and deliver a cleaner greener borough

From Monday 4 December, Newham Council is investing £600,000 a year to move to weekly bin collections for recycled waste. Glass, foil, aerosols, mixed paper, cardboard, tins and plastic tubs and trays are amongst the items that the Council will now collect weekly – making recycling in Newham easier than ever.

Councillor James Asser, Cabinet member for Environment and Sustainable Transport said: “This is a breakthrough moment for the borough and our residents in meeting our promise to deliver weekly recycling collections. It follows the previous expansion of the range of materials that can be recycled and is another moment where together we deliver on our ambition to reduce the environmental impact of our waste and increase recycling.

“We really want to bring our residents along with us on this journey in delivering greater recycling and making Newham a greener borough.

“I know there is a big desire amongst Newham residents to be able to recycle more and people are keen to do their bit in reducing waste. Launching weekly collections to will make it even easier to increase the amount we all put in our recycling bins.”

For the change to have impact, residents are being asked to work collaboratively with Council collection crews, to learn how to recycle effectively and recycle weekly. The Council, for its part, will embark on a substantial campaign of education, information and explanation to make sure residents are aware of the right way to recycle, but also understand why it is so important.

Cllr Asser added: “The introduction of weekly recycling is a turning point that will allow us to change the way we dispose of our household rubbish to make the borough cleaner and greener and support our Climate Action Plan. We are investing £600,000 to introduce this change which residents have been asking for and we believe will raise the percentage of rubbish recycled event further.”

Residents have already made huge strides in increasing Newham’s recycling rates over the last couple of years from 21% in 2020 to 25% in 2023. The Be Bin Day Ready campaign aims to keep this momentum going by introducing weekly collections and emphasising what can be recycled, which includes glass, foil, aerosols, mixed paper, cardboard, tins and plastic bottles, tubs and trays.

Alongside the changes to recycling collection, the Council is investing in measures to tackle fly-tipping, improve street cleaning and to increase resident’s satisfaction with the place they live and meet its commitment to make Newham cleaner and greener.

The four-year investment is funding a new team to tackle fly-tipping and other anti-social behaviour, while making the service more responsive to residents.
