• High-risk fasting groups to be offered dedicated advice and support
• Healthcare professionals from Newham Council and the NHS will be present
• Ramadan will run from Sunday 10 March for 29 or 30 days

Newham Council, in collaboration with the NHS, is organising free events at Mosques and libraries before and during Ramadan. The aim is to promote safe fasting practices and encourage healthy dietary choices among residents. Healthcare professionals, including doctors and nutritionists, will offer advice on managing Type 2 diabetes, providing guidance for those with specific health conditions, and suggesting healthier alternatives for breaking fasts. Free health checks will also be provided.

The Qur'an requires Muslims to fast from sunrise to sunset during the month of Ramadan. However, people who are ill or have medical conditions do not have to fast, including people living with diabetes. Newham Council is encouraging diabetic Muslims living in the borough to check with their healthcare team before deciding to fast; they can review and consider how their diabetes is being managed and whether fasting could put them at risk. These events showcase the Well Newham approach and support the council’s ‘a healthier Newham’ priority.

Councillor Neil Wilson, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, said:

“In our diverse borough, it is pleasing to see so many members of our community coming together to honour the fasting period. We want to ensure everyone is equipped with the appropriate knowledge and advice to ensure they are able to fast in a safe and healthy way.

“I would encourage anyone who is in need of some extra guidance to come along to our upcoming events where we will have experts on hand to offer tailored support.

“If you decide to fast, please be assured you can do so in a safe way and we are here to support you and your loved ones. Wishing a wonderful Eid al-Fitr to all of those who will be celebrating.”

Newham Council has a range of support tools available to residents who want to improve their health and wellbeing, including help to lose weight thanks to Live Well Newham. The 12-week weight management programme, delivered by Xyla Health, supports people to achieve long-term behaviour change by providing personalised support to help residents eat well, move more and take charge of how they think, eat and sleep.

Newham GP, Dr Tamara Hibbert, said: “It may not be safe for you to fast; if you are unsure or have questions, speak to your Imam and the medical expert who usually helps with your diabetes care.

“If you do fast, continue to take your medication.  Some medication may need to be changed for a short time during Ramadan to help you fast safely. Again, please speak to a medical expert about this.

“Finally, remember to drink plenty of water when you break your fast, even during Taraweeh prayers.”
