Statement regarding murder in Stratford

A Newham Council spokesperson said: “We are saddened by the news of the fatality in Stratford. Any death is a tragedy but it is particularly heartbreaking when the victim is so young. Our thoughts are with his family during this time.

“The council fully supports the police investigation and our absolute priority is to ensure measures are in place so the police can carry out their investigation. Council officers fully supported the police last night and the Borough Emergency Control Centre has been fully operational to monitor the situation. The Mayor of Newham and Chief Executive also visited the scene to offer reassurance to residents and thank the police involved.

“As with any major incident of this nature, we opened up an overnight rest centre to provide emergency shelter for any residents and others who may have been displaced as the investigation at the scene was carried out.  In total, 29 people made use of the rest centre. It will remain open for as long as the cordon is in place.

“The police investigation is ongoing and anyone with information should call the police on 101, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or www.fearless.org.”
