• School Holiday vouchers will continue for the coming year
• Supported by Central Government’s Housing Support Funds
Newham Council’s Cabinet has approved a range of hardship support for vulnerable residents totalling almost £5.9 million for the coming year. The spending is supported by Central Government’s Household Support Fund.
The Council expects to support 23,000 children during the school holidays over the coming year with a £12.50 voucher each week for every student eligible for free school meals.
Our Newham will distribute just over £3 million to help a predicted 5,000 residents with food and energy costs as part of local welfare provision.
A further £650,000 will be distributed by eight Children’s Centres across the borough, offering families critical support for food and energy costs.
Meanwhile, £900,000 will be distributed by Newham Food Alliance, their partners and other Voluntary, Community and Faith groups to provide residents with food and other essentials.
Some £150,000 will support Newham residents in, or moving out of, temporary accommodation, offering direct support for essentials such as fridges or cookers.
Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE said: “The Household Support Fund has been a lifeline for many residents over the past six years.
“Our combination of direct distribution through the council, particularly Our Newham and Children’s Centres, and through our partners in voluntary, community and faith groups has supported tens of thousands of Newham residents going through difficult times.
“I know the support confirmed by Cabinet today will help thousands more Newham residents and represents this council’s commitment to supporting our most vulnerable residents and Building a Fairer Newham.”
