Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE statement on the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide

Marking 30 years since the Srebrenica genocide, Mayor Fiaz honours victims, supports survivors, and urges action against hatred and division.

“On the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, we pause to remember the more than 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys who were murdered because of their faith.

We stand in solidarity with the survivors and families who continue to live with the pain and trauma of those events and we honour those lives lost. Their courage and dignity in the face of unimaginable pain remains a powerful reminder of the need for justice, truth, and remembrance, but also the continual fight against islamophobia.

Srebrenica is not just a tragedy of the past - it is a stark warning of the dangers of hatred, division and dehumanisation. As we mark this solemn anniversary, we recommit to challenging all forms of prejudice and discrimination, wherever we see them.”
