Cash injection for cosy homes in North Woolwich, East Ham and Canning Town

More than 350 of Newham’s worst insulated homes are to get a major refit following a £1.52m Government cash injection.

The Council’s Cabinet agreed to match fund the money from the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund to complete the £3.3m works.

In all, a total of 359 of the worst‑performing homes primarily in North Woolwich, East Ham, and Canning Town will be refurbished over the next three years.

The money will insure that mould and damp problems are cleared up, as well as helping the council achieve its climate ambitions, in line with the borough’s Just Transition Plan.

Cllr Blossom Young, Newham’s Cabinet Member for Council Housing Improvements said it will improve residents’ health and should help cut heating bills.

She said: “Accepting this award, and entering the Partnership, ensures that the Council capitalises on every pound of external funding, accelerates delivery towards our climate and housing statutory targets, and puts residents’ health, comfort and energy bills first.

“It will also create local green jobs and supply‑chain opportunities through our Community Wealth‑Building approach.”

The report states that the homes earmarked have been “prioritised and chosen for the bid given many flats have known damp and mould issues, falling below Energy Performance Certificate C, including two high-rise blocks and areas where we know fuel poverty is high”.

Work carried out will include

  • Cavity wall insulation
  • Flat roof insulation
  • Double glazing
  • Door replacements
  • Solar PV
  • Wastewater heat recovery.
