Newham Council has today (Wednesday 13 Aug) published a notice confirming a by-election for Plaistow South will be held on Thursday 18 September, following the death of Councillor Neil Wilson in July.
Nominations for candidates are now open and must be received by the Returning Officer by 4pm Thursday 21 August.
The deadline to register to vote is midnight on Tuesday 2 September 2025. Applications can be submitted online by visiting www.gov.uk/registertovote.
For those wishing to register for a postal vote – the deadline is 5pm on Wednesday 3 September, while the date to register for a proxy vote is Wednesday 5pm on 10 September.

Voters are reminded that to vote they must provide photo identification at the polling station when they cast their vote. The following forms of ID are acceptable:
- Passport
- Driving licence (including provisional license)
- Blue badge
- Certain concessionary travel cards
- Identity card with PASS mark (Proof of Age Standards Scheme)
- Biometric Immigration document
- Defence identity card
- Certain national identity cards

The election on 18 September will see four polling stations operating in the Plaistow South ward from 7am until 10pm – a notice of polling stations will be published on 10 September 2025.
