Newham’s Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz OBE congratulated pupils from Plashet School, this morning as they picked up their GCSE results.
The girls were among thousands of teenagers from across Newham collecting their grades from the borough’s secondary schools and colleges.
Among those she talked to were Sawdah, 16, who was awarded a top Grade 9 in maths plus a further nine GCSEs.
She also met Nohor and Amna, also both aged 16, who achieved Grade 9s in Computer Science and Art respectively.
The Mayor, a former pupil at the school, said it was great to see the buzz as the girls, some of whom had been queuing more than hour before the gates opened, collected their results.
She said: “This really is Opportunity Newham in action. Our young people and schools can once again celebrate fantastic results.
“It’s a joy to talk to these young women with their whole lives ahead of them, making the most of what is on offer.
“And we mustn’t forget that while it is right that we praise our youngsters, we must also say thank-you to our hard-working teachers, staff, and the whole school community, who have made this possible.”
Meanwhile Councillor Sarah Ruiz, Cabinet Member Children Services and Education joined young people at Eastlea Community School, Canning Town, as they learned their grades.
She said: “The borough’s results continue to improve year on year and continue to beat the national average making Newham one of the best places in the country for young people to live grow and learn.
“This is down to the hard work and resilience of our students, and the terrific teachers and school support staff who work with our young people, parents and carers to create a supportive environment for learning.
“I really enjoyed spending the morning with the brilliant Eastlea students and shared their excitement as they prepare for the next phase of their lives, be that college, apprenticeship or work.”
Among the pupils she met were Ihsan, who scored an impressive nine Grade 9s, and Gurleen, who received seven Grade 9s.
