Newham Council has launched Let’s Love Newham, a new campaign to bring everyone together to tackle fly-tipping, reduce waste, and make our streets and parks cleaner and greener for all.

  • Newham Council has launched the Let’s Love Newham campaign to tackle fly-tipping, reduce waste and keep our streets and parks cleaner and greener.
  • The campaign builds on successes like Be Bin Day Ready, which reduced unpresented bins from 30,000 in August 2024 to 5,774 by February 2025.
  • Residents are encouraged to get involved – from recycling right and reporting fly-tipping and fly-tippers on the free Love Newham app, to joining local clean-ups.

The campaign builds on initiatives like ‘Be Bin Day Ready’, which saw a significant drop in the number of bins not presented on collection days, and the introduction of the Council’s ‘Tidy Teams’, who work across the borough to ensure a constant presence on the streets to tackle fly-tipping; in 2024/25 alone, they cleared 50,920 fly-tips, weighing a total of 2,800 tonnes. By continuing to share positive messages and practical tips, the Council hopes to introduce even more changes that will help create healthier, happier neighbourhoods.

Mayor of Newham, Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, said: “Let’s Love Newham is about pride, partnership, and action. We’ve already seen what can be achieved when our residents, community groups, and council teams work together – from litter picking and the clearing of fly tips, to making bin collections more reliable and keeping our parks award-winning and beautiful. But there’s more to do. By recycling right, reporting those that dump rubbish, and getting involved in local clean-ups, every single one of us can make a real difference."

Cllr John Whitworth, Cabinet Member for Air Quality, Climate Emergency & Environment: “We all want Newham to be a place we’re proud to call home. Thanks to community litter picks and the hard work of our street cleaning and recycling teams, we’ve already made great progress. Let’s Love Newham is about building on our successes – focusing on the everyday things that can support our work, like putting the right waste into the right bin. We can all play our part in keeping Newham clean, safe, and welcoming for everyone.”

National research by Keep Britain Tidy shows that while two-thirds of people love where they live, almost three-quarters feel less proud when they see litter. In Newham, we’re already making a difference: our Street Cleansing, Parks and Green Spaces, and Waste Reduction teams have been nationally recognised for their hard work, and last year the borough received six Green Flag Awards; the international standard for quality parks and green spaces.

As part of the campaign, residents will see a focus on:

  • Food waste recycling – phased roll out starting in November 2025, with collections beginning for 12,500 homes, ahead of a full roll out in 2026/27
  • Recycling right – tackling the 35 - 40% of waste put into a recycling bin that cannot be recycled
  • Street cleaning – highlighting the work of our cleansing teams, encouraging responsible use of bins, and showing the impact of litter picking events and reporting fly-tipping and fly-tippers.

Residents are being invited to play their part by using the free Love Newham app, to report issues like fly-tipping, overflowing bins and litter in under 40 seconds. Every report helps keep our borough clean.
