Newham Data has been named a finalist in the prestigious Tech Impact Awards 2025 for its work inspiring young people to explore careers in data and technology.
The initiative was launched by the Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz OBE to make the borough London’s go-to destination for data-driven businesses, innovators, and investors.
It is rooted in her vision to harness the power of data to drive inclusive growth and unlock opportunities for all.
Mayor Fiaz said: “Being shortlisted for the Tech Impact Awards is powerful recognition of how we’re driving inclusive growth through innovation.
“Opportunity Newham and Newham Data are about ensuring every resident, especially our young people, can share in the opportunities created by the UK’s data economy.
“Through initiatives like the Data Ambassadors programme, we’re not just inspiring the next generation we’re building the foundations for a fairer, more digital future for everyone.”
Since its launch, Newham Data has reached hundreds of local young people, with highlights including:
- 700 girls attending Data Inspiration Sessions with Girls in Data.
- 98 students taking part in AI & Gaming Pitch Challenges during and after school.
- 100+ young people at the International Youth Day tech careers event.
- 85 workplace visits to major tech firms.
- Cybersecurity, AI, and digital skills sessions delivered in schools and youth zones.
Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive: 88% of participants said they felt more inspired to pursue a career in data or technology and 85% gained a better understanding of future career options.
Newham Data reflects the Mayor’s wider ambition to lift a new generation above the barriers of inequality and ensure Newham’s young people are equipped to thrive in the digital economy of the future.
